Silvery slate tiles, each measuring 12 inches square, form the building blocks for this sculptural guest bath makeover. Senior project designer Mark Lind used contrapuntal bands of tile to give the space depth and to create functional ledges. “I like how horizontal lines and proportions immediately make a space more contemporary,” he says. Our jury appreciated these touches—and the highly custom cantilevered sink made of lightweight concrete reinforced with steel mesh. Lind also had the mirror above it cut into strips to better suit the tile composition. “The ins and outs of all these volumes are really complicated, but they made it work,” said a judge.
