When Hurricane Katrina substantially damaged this 1940s home in Pass Christian, Miss., local firm Watters Architecture aimed to restore the Lamantia Residence to its simplistic, Southern style while also incorporating modern building advancements in storm resiliency, energy efficiency, and technology.

On the whole, the project’s design celebrates the horizontal more than the vertical, according to the firm. As such, horizontal drawers—opposed to a single cabinet—seemed fitting underneath the stairs for extra storage. The drawers were assembled by cabinet carpenter Bill Adam in Bay St. Louis, Miss., as a trapezoidal cabinet that slid into place, with each drawer constructed as a rectangular box with a trapezoidal front panel. Three sizes of long, horizontal cabinet pulls were chosen to coordinate with each drawer’s size.

The homeowners utilize the drawers to store athletic equipment and household linens. The stairs above lead to a recreational room that was quickly commandeered by the homeowners’ teenage son, as it boasts the best views of the property.
