Recognized as a merit winner in the custom home category of this year’s Builder’s Choice Design Awards program, the Modern Meets Mountains home in Big Sky, Montana, was intended to stand out from the landscape, but also embrace the ruggedness of the site.

Beginning at the home’s front entrance, architecture firm Stuart Silk Architects and contractor Charter Custom Homes designed an almost 12-foot-tall, 4-foot-wide statement door that welcomes guests into the 7,574-square-foot modern abode.
Made of 4 millimeters of blackened stainless steel on the exterior and 4 millimeters of hot rolled and blackened steel on the interior, the door is punctured with 1-inch square holes that are glazed with insulated glass. The openings create small port holes to allow light to filter through from the opposing window wall in the living room.
The door was fabricated with a thermally broken core and frame to stand up to typical temperatures that a mountain home would see throughout the year. The final touch was the large bronze handle that was formed and folded to create the custom door pull.
