The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the 20 university teams that will be competing in the 2009 Solar Decathlon competition, selected from universities in the U.S., Canada, and Germany. Each team will receive $100,000 in funding from the DOE to design, build, and operate an energy-efficient, fully solar-powered home, which will be transported to Washington, D.C., and rebuilt on the National Mall for the competition in the fall of 2009.
Solar Decathlon 2009 teams are:
Boston Architectural College/Tufts University
Cornell University
Iowa State University
Missouri University of Science and Technology
Ohio State University
The Pennsylvania State University
Rice University
Santa Clara University
Technische Universität Darmstadt
Universidad de Puerto Rico
Universidad Polytécnica de Madrid
University of Arizona
University of Calgary/SAI Polytechnic and Mount Royal College
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
University of Kentucky
University of Louisiana at Lafayette
University of Minnesota
University of Waterloo/Ryerson University/Simon Fraser University
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
The design concepts selected represent a range of building technologies from diverse geographic locations, including those targeted for low-income gulf-state rebuilding, affordable urban renewal, and mass-producible habitats for suburban America, according to the DOE.
The Solar Decathlon tests the homes’ designs, operation, and the teams’ success in 10 areas: architecture, engineering, market viability, communications, comfort, appliances, hot water, lighting, energy balance, and transportation.
