An early rendering of the now-built Empowerhouse.

I’ve been pleased to see the Empowerhouse, a 2011 Solar Decathlon entry-turned-Habitat for Humanity project, getting tons of press. Residential Architect wrote about the net zero energy house in September 2011, when the plans to move it to a Habitat site in Washington, D.C., had just been made.

Designed by students from Parsons The New School for Design; The Milano School for International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy at the New School; and Stevens Institute of Technology, Empowerhouse is now built and looks terrific. And it’s been certified as a Passive House. Among the dozens of recent stories on the completed home, I’ve particularly enjoyed one in the Washington Post and one by my colleague at ECOHOME magazine, Jennifer Goodman.
