In Weston, Mass., there were few options nearby where local well-off empty-nesters, burdened with the care of their 7,500- to 10,000-square-foot homes, could downsize to something smaller and less trouble, yet still have the style and quality they were accustomed to. Then Highland Meadows opened, offering a solution for the 55-plus resident who wanted to age comfortably in a no-maintenance house without sacrificing the luxury of their current home. The 69 attached and detached homes sit twisted, tilted, and tucked onto 44 acres, 40 percent of which remains woods and fields. The homes are traditional, only smaller, and because they are condominiums, without the worries of external upkeep. The homes boast age-in-place features in three styles, farm house, colonial, and cape, and half a dozen floor plans, allowing adjacent homes to have the same floor plan yet still provide a varied streetscape, says Ellen Perko, an associate principal at CBT Architects.
