People who live on small city lots often find themselves standing at the kitchen sink and peering directly across the side yard into their neighbors’ home. But it doesn’t have to be that way. This kitchen layout deliberately shifts the vantage point by putting the sink in the corner. Large wrap-around windows facing south and west redirect views toward the backyard and make the interior space feel bigger by channeling in more light and extending sight lines.
Otherwise, it’s a simple, beautiful space that blends classic elements (raised panel cabinets with glass uppers) with modern touches (lightweight metal chairs and a sleek stainless hood). These cool tones are juxtaposed with dark-stained oak floors and walnut countertops. The large marble island, which provides ample prep area as well as dining for a family of five, is the great unifier.
“The great thing about Calcutta marble is that it has both warm and cool tones to it,” says architect Jean Rehkamp Larson. “It has browns but also grays, so you can pair it with just about anything.”
