Partners AARP and the NAHB recently announced the winners of the 2007 Livable Communities Award, which recognizes forward-thinking home and community design providing attractive, safe, comfortable, and accessible living spaces for people of all ages and abilities.
Five companies were chosen for awards in five categories: two builders, two developers, and one remodeler.
Builder up to 2500 square feet—John Wesley Miller Companies for Armory Park del Sol, Tucson, Ariz. A user-friendly home featuring state-of-the-art energy-efficient technology along with well-designed living spaces and architectural details.
Builder more than 2500 square feet—Wendt Builders Inc. for Olde Town Grayson, Lot 13B, Grayson, Ga. An “easy-living” house with barrier-free showers, a step-free entrance, broad doorways, and many other accessible features.
Developer up to 250 units—Madison Area Community Land Trust for Troy Gardens, Madison, Wis. A 30-unit, mixed-income, accessible co-housing community featuring 26 acres of open space used as an organic farm, gardens, and wildlife habitat, and several transit options.
Developer more than 250 units—The Integral Group for CollegeTown at West End, Atlanta, Ga. A mixed-use, mixed-income college town community that is pedestrian-friendly and will grow to include multi-family apartments and units for the 50-plus crowd, along with retail and commercial space, single family and town homes.
Remodeler more than $25,000—Quality, Design, & Construction Inc. for “Ann’s Ridge Road Dream,” Raleigh, N.C. A remodel that accommodates the owners’ current and future needs with safety and accessibility features such as step-free entry, no first-floor hallways, curbless shower, and other details.
