FourPlans: Christmas at the Farmhouse

These on-trend designs feature versatile guest spaces for holiday entertaining.

2 MIN READ

While it’s a bad idea to design for once-a-year-events like Christmas celebrations, a smart layout will easily flex to accommodate entertaining. And these days, the rise of multigenerational living means that a house plan with room for extended family members can carry wide appeal. Here, some standout farmhouse styles (the hot look of the moment) with clever floor plans.

In-Law Suite with Kitchenette

Inside this chic modern farmhouse, an in-law suite invites elderly relatives (or grown children) to stay in comfort on the main level. In this private enclave, a kitchenette, walk-in closet, ensuite bathroom, and large bedroom create a relaxing space. On the opposite side of the home, the master suite invites owners to kick back in their spacious private bathroom, with the laundry room conveniently located just steps away through the walk-in closet. Other highlights include the large pantry, optional bonus suite, and spacious rear porch. See more images, information, and the floor plans.

Flexible Den/Bedroom

Step out from the master suite to the back patio, where owners can place a hot tub or simply some chairs and a table. In the main gathering area of the home, the kitchen sports a big island with plenty of room for cooking, eating, and socializing. Both the great room and the dining area open outside. The den near the front can hold guests. See more images, information, and the floor plans.

Guest Lair Upstairs

With four bedrooms on the main level and two more upstairs (plus bonus space), this striking farmhouse can accommodate extended family during the holidays. But for the rest of the year, it’s easy to just live on the main level, where the open great room separates the comfortable master suite from the secondary bedrooms. Bedroom 2 could also become a study, with optional double doors opening to the great room. See more images, information, and the floor plans.

Bunk Room for Grandkids

Besides a guest suite on the main level, this charming narrow-lot plan holds a bunk room upstairs that’s perfect for kids’ sleepovers. Three additional bedrooms, each generously sized, also sit on the second level. The lower level can be finished to hold even more space for entertaining and storage.
