FourPlans: Designs for Gen X

These family-friendly designs will appeal to the sandwich generation.

Aiming to please a Gen X audience? Even if you find the fixation on generational differences to be overly simplified, it can be a challenge to turn from Millennial concerns to those of a group with, well, very different needs. Gen X buyers may need room for school-age kids, aging parents, and even pets. These spacious designs handle a variety of situations with flexible layouts.

Full In-Law Apartment

Families with live-in relatives will appreciate the attached but independent apartment on the main level. In this private enclave, an in-law (or perhaps a tenant) gets a full kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom, laundry closet, and even a porch. The main portion of the home features an angled kitchen snack bar that opens to the casual dining room. A study makes it easy to work from home. Parents of young children will like the upstairs location of the master suite, not far from the other bedrooms but complete with a modern bathroom and large walk-in closet. Outdoor-Focused Layout

This sleek home wraps around a spacious side courtyard to provide plenty of outdoor living, even on a not-super-wide lot. The master suite and a secluded guest zone both reside on the main level, while kids will make the upper level (with two bedroom suites and a loft) their hangout upstairs. Other notable features include a wet bar in the great room and the large pantry that can hold enough groceries for a busy family. See more images, information, and the floor plans.

An elderly parent will appreciate the first-floor location of the guest suite, complete with a private bathroom that boasts a large shower. Golf-cart storage in the garage could also be used for a lawnmower or sports equipment. In the middle of the home, the open layout encourages mingling. A small office can be closed off with trendy barn doors. Two additional bedrooms upstairs can hold kids. See more images, information, and the floor plans.

Located on the main floor and boasting an adjoining full bathroom, the den can easily become a guest suite or grandma’s room. Four more bedrooms upstairs hold the rest of the family. The master suite includes a huge closet, sleek bathroom, and easy proximity to the laundry room. The open layout downstairs feels contemporary and relaxed.
