Simplicity reigns with today’s most popular house plans, especially barndominiums and even those with conventional stick framing, like this one.
That often means a rectangular shape and no extra bump-outs, bay windows, or the like.
So how do you add back some pizzazz? Enter details like decorative trusses and a wide front porch. They draw the eye to the entrance and add a rustic vibe.

Designer Steven Madden, who created this plan in tandem with associate designer Logan Vecillio, made a simple switch to boost affordability. “Usually on a barndo, the main roof sits on an elevated wall because of the oversized roll-up doors of the garage, etc. So, with this house, we kept the garage doors 8-feet tall, resulting in a more standard roof height.”
Plan #1074-119
Square footage: 2,367
Bedrooms: 4
Bathrooms: 3
Dimensions: 63’ 6” x 71’ 11”
Starting at: $1,245
Inside, every bit of space is used wisely, from the mudroom to the hidden pantry in the kitchen. More wood trusses inside draw the eye up in the great room. And the main suite opens directly to the laundry room for extra convenience.
