What will the new year bring for housing design trends? Here’s a plan that feels fresh and exciting.
First, the cottage-like exterior. We’ve been seeing new designs that showcase stone, arches, and other whimsical elements that feel plucked out of “Grimms’ Fairy Tales.”
This handsome new design uses stucco, which despite falling from the top spot as the most popular exterior wall material, according to an NAHB analysis of Census data, is still the top pick for 25% of builds started in 2024. The massive stone chimney adds definite cottage vibes. But overall, the look is clean and contemporary, and feels like a natural next step from modern farmhouse to jazz things up.

Inside, it’s all about comfort and practicality. Abundant storage zones include the walk-in pantry, with a view of the porch, the mud room, and the main suite’s closet that opens directly to the laundry room. Oh, and the wine wall.
Plan #455-678
Square Footage: 3,242
Bedrooms: 3
Bathrooms: 2.5
Dimensions: 87’ x 71’ 4”
Starting at: $2,194
The layout is all on one level, making it easier to age in place. An enclosed living room could easily serve as a home office, adding more flexibility. And the wall of folding doors that opens the great room to the huge back porch feels both completely now and totally timeless.
