No home buyer wants to be reminded constantly of the aging process. They want to live comfortably in their homes with universal design features that are invisible. Deryl Patterson, president at Housing Design Matters, is the architect on the NEXTadventure project focused on 55-plus buyers and she describes the features that were incorporated with universal design in mind.
Lots of natural light, beautiful grab bars that don’t seem like grab bars, storage that isn’t up a ladder in a scary attic space, wider hallways and no-step transitions between the house and the garage are all features that allow this home buyer to age in place gracefully.
Some of these features are important from the moment the home buyer starts living in the new home, and some make it easier and more comfortable to live in the home as they age. The combination is a hard balance to strike. Patterson shares her expertise in this video.
