The 2017 Brick in Architecture Awards recently honored 35 winners in 19 states for outstanding and resilient design that incorporates clay brick.

Judged by independent design professionals, the Brick Industry Association’s (BIA) premier design competition generated 91 entries this year with Best in Class, Gold Silver and Bronze winners in eight categories. The Best in Class Single-Family winner is a home in Oxford, Md., that was inspired by early 18th century architecture.

In the tradition of Williamsburg, Va., the home’s exterior walls are constructed of hand-molded red brick laid with glazed headers set in a Flemish bond pattern with contrasting rubbed brick detailing. The front entrance features limestone steps with custom bronze cramps, a painted wood pediment, and period-appropriate light fixtures. The window and door frames are of pegged mortise and tenon construction and interior woodwork has mortise and tenon joinery with hand-planed surfaces. The steeply-pitched roof is clad in heavy cedar shakes.

“The winners demonstrate brick’s aesthetic flexibility, and its integral role in any sustainable, low maintenance and durable building strategy,” says Ray Leonhard, BIA’s president and CEO.
