On a picturesque tree-lined street in Forest Hills, N.Y., local firm Sonya Lee Architect renovated a 1930s Tudor-style home for a young family of four. The updates from Fowa Construction honored the 4,700-square-foot home’s classic character, but also provided amenities for a busy modern-day family, including a new kitchen, a large dining area, and a mudroom with custom storage and shelving.
In the childrens’ bedrooms, the team designed the spaces with lots of storage for easy access to toys and books to encourage imaginative play. A small white oak nook, built within a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf, breaks the symmetry of the white cubbies and gives the children a unique space to read, craft, or play. Plush-quilted cushions fabricated specifically for the alcove from Dutch textile maker Febrik offer a comfortable oasis for afternoon naps, too.
