Why It’s Important to go Beyond Housing and Create a Home

Jason McLennan and a team of wellness experts discuss how to take risk to improve housing.

Jason McLennan—CEO of McLennan Design, founder of the Living Building Challenge, and 2017 HIVE dean—wants to take the global view of sustainability and narrow it down to focus on something we all hold near and dear: Home.

In this video, McLennan discusses his HIVE program focus on the intersection of health, wellness, and technology and how that intersection is going to impact how we live and how we feel at home. He explores how technology will facilitate a better footprint in the world.

It’s going to take risk, such as collaborating with different industries and even sometimes with competitors to disrupt or challenge conventional thought and improve current processes. A panel made up of Ben Skoog, vice president, growth and innovation at LP Building Products; Lee Clark-Sellers, innovation officer at Ply Gem Industries; Dana Pillai, executive director at Well Living Lab; and Mike Schlegel, president at Bozzuto Construction Co., will work with McLennan to explore this topic.

Collaborating with other groups and creating new relationships will be the cornerstone of innovation in this field where technology, housing, and wellness are merging for the first time.

“The biggest challenge is really that people have a hard time changing,” says McLennan. “We avoid risk because it represents a financial risk. And, whenever you are dealing with a new trend, it could represent just a fad. But the bigger risk is doing nothing. Or feeling like we don’t have to change.”

McLennan and his panel will present at the 2017 HIVE Conference, scheduled for Dec. 6 to 7 in Los Angeles. Register now to join the discussion!
