On March 31, the design world mourned the loss of internationally renowned architect, Zaha Hadid, Hon. FAIA. Hadid was the first female recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize as well as—in her own right—the RIBA Gold Medal, among many other “firsts” in the field of architecture. Her passing from a heart attack at 65 was confirmed this morning by the London-based firm she founded, Zaha Hadid Architects.
Hadid, who is perhaps best known for her curvaceous, iconic structures–such as the Heydar Aliyev Center in Tel Aviv, or the Aquatics Center in London, has also played a strong role in the progressive residential landscape. In fact, her first realised project was a three-story housing development for the Internationale Bauausstellung which was constructed in 1993.
