Honey locusts and river birches planted in the entry garden echo the house’s wood struts. They form a leafy canopy for the floating step ramp, made of ipe and steel, leading to the front door.
H. Keith Wagner Partnership designed a fluid landscape that flows around three maple trees in the auto court, under the bridge connecting house and studio, and around to the back of the house, where stairs lead down to the lake edge.
The design concept revolves around simple materials taken directly from the site and a medley of native greenery. A walkway of crushed stone and blasted rock leads to the rear garden. Frothy ferns and swirls of golden hakone grass reinforce the garden’s water-like sense of movement.
