This 1,100-square-foot vacation home in Aspen, Colo., may be short on space, but it’s big on ideas that make a place for everything, even the owners’ two kids. When it’s time for bed, they can be tucked snugly into their bedroom’s custom cabinetry. The cleverly designed storage houses two beds plus books, toys, skis, and clothes all in one happening place. The top bed hangs from steel rods, leaving enough room below for a trundle bed and plenty of nifty storage, including a swivel-out TV stand. The maple steps make a nice foil to the rich mahogany all around, plus they double as a set of secret cubbies reached from inside the adjacent wardrobe. A ceiling panel ties it all together and lends this sweet built-in a furniture look. And for the grown ups, designer Scott Lindenau, principal of Aspen-based Studio B Architects, designed the beds “to swing out, so it’s easy to change the sheets.”
