Syncline Master Bath

Boulder, Colo.

1 MIN READ

This master bath is a beauty in its own right, but it’s also “of a piece” in that it incorporates many of the same materials that are used elsewhere both inside and outside of this serene house at the base of the Rockies. In this light-filled retreat, jarrah wood (which is also used as exterior cladding and decking) takes the form of vanity cabinets and a custom bench, as well as flooring around a freestanding tub. “In Australia, this wood is used for everything from boat docks to warehouse pallets,” explains architect E.J. Meade. ”It’s rapidly renewable and very dense. Like ipe, it has a high oil content, so getting a penetrating sealer requires that you wipe it with solvent first.” Other subdued materials, including soapstone, marble, and glass tile, evoke the colors and textures of the natural landscape, as seen through a ribbon of steel frame windows.
