Slender steel fins next to an adjacent rammed earth wall form a sculptural outdoor shower enclosure that captivated our jury right away. One judge commented that the fence acted more like an extrusion of the wall rather than a separate component. “The clients wanted something that felt modern but also rugged, organic, and very connected to the site,” says project architect Jennifer Mei. She adds that the design team asked local steel artist Ben Roth to create a fence as the shower barrier because they wanted to play with patterns of light and shadow against the rammed earth wall. In addition to alternating the angles of the fins to change the transparency of the fence, the artist scooped out the tops in a graduated sequence. These two techniques give the steel a soft, undulating quality that is a theme in Roth’s work. “The massiveness of the rammed earth next to the lightness of the fence somehow in its complexity became this simple composition,” Mei explains. “It’s all about the materials and use of light.”
