As home building continues to drag along the bottom, foreclosures have become an increasingly complex threat to recovery. Last year, a record 2.9 million U.S. properties received a foreclosure filing, according to RealtyTrac data. And estimates for the number of foreclosures still in the pipeline run as high as four million.
