Behind the Numbers:

While Pulte logged a large loss on its books for the third quarter, CEO Richard Dugas claimed it was actually a profitable quarter if you don’t count the $241 million paper-only charge against the company’s goodwill. While the goodwill loss looks big this year, it’s small compared to the charge against goodwill it took in the same quarter last year. PulteGroup’s stock value, which plunged by more than half from Sept. 30, 2010 to Sept. 30, 2011 to $3.95 a share, is impacting the value of the company’s goodwill.
