Small Builder Survival Guide

Big builders have buying power, better access to financing, and lots in great locations. So how can small to mid-size builders survive – and thrive – in a world filled with behemoths? No. 1 strategy -- build what they don’t and where they’re not.

The November issue of Builder magazine includes a story about how smaller builders can successfully compete with large production builders. The piece contains profiles of six builders that describe the strategies the companies have employed over the years to compete with, and even beat, the big guys.

But keeping one’s distance from large builders isn’t just geographic: The builders we profile also target specific customer niches with different products and upgrades, or construct certain types of houses to distinguish themselves. They also build infill projects that big publics don’t want to touch; can erect fewer houses in subdivisions; take advantage of their local expertise; and can concentrate on single markets.
