CallisonRTKL has been involved in continuously updating Australia’s oldest and largest shopping mall since 1990 when it helped transform the thriving and successful shopping center into a lifestyle center. To sustain the shopping center’s position in the market and continue to support its growth, CallisonRTKL designed the most recent change to the center: a master-planned expansion program that turned it into a 1.45 million-SF, award-winning “Fashion Capital” of Australia.
Chadstone’s new claim to fame is the 31-M high, 7,000-SM gridshell glass roof, resulting in a dramatic, column-free space. A product of collaboration with specialist engineers and research departments at University of Stuttgart and University of Bath, the design was achieved using 3D parametric modelling and refined through a combination of video and imagery. The roof is the first of its kind on the continent.
