Project Description

To further support effective teaching of engineering principles, the Ira Fulton Schools of Engineering commissioned the Tutoring Center at ECG as phase I of a two part adaptive reuse of the 1960’s designed Ralph Haver Engineering G-wing. The project required extensive code studies and reworking in order to bring the “pre-ordinance facility into compliance and expand occupant loads.

In collaboration with ASU’s management group and campus architects, and a steering committee of stakeholders, the team established a need for transparency in the design, respect for the current structure, and usability of writable surfaces. The resulting efforts led to a facade design that increased visibility of the tutoring program and respected the existing structure without sacrificing the need for writable space and comfort by implementing a series of sliding white board panels integrated into a custom glazing system that was shaded from the eastern sun with vertical fins.

The space doubles the tutoring center capacity, and is designed for resilience with reconfigurable furnishing and whiteboard systems along with adjustable overhead power supply via chord reels allowing for flexibility of layout and group size. The space was conceived to function as an active participant of the learning environment.
