Project Description

The Fulton School of Engineering ECG Generator Labs project represents the next generation of “Maker Spaces” for the Fulton School of Engineering. The Generator Labs combine multiple users and programs by creating highly adaptable spaces that fuse the functions of traditional lecture classrooms, seminar space, and student gathering spaces. Acting as a showpiece for the School of Engineering, this project provides a space where engineering students gather, generate, test, present and later crowdsource funding for innovative projects in an open-air marketplace. A student lounge and flexible conferencing and review labs engage small and large groups for impromptu collaborative meetings.

Transparency is central to the collaborative process and is embodied within the design in the form of floor-to-ceiling glazing which invites students not within the program to engage with the School of Engineering. The location of the project within the 1960’s designed Ralph Haver Engineering G-wing, required extensive code studies and reworking in order to bring the “pre-ordinance” facility into compliance with current codes and to expand occupant loads to allow for multiple uses. Special attention was taken to design a space which harmonized with and enhanced the existing structure, while providing a space which portrayed the innovation of its program.
