Project Description
NK Architects is the architect of record and healthcare designer for this $125,000,000 hospital modernization and addition.
This project is at the forefront of healthcare design by creating a new state of the art Emergency Department and other critical hospital support elements such as a new Central Sterile Processing facility and hospital lab while integrating 100,000 SF of new outpatient services such as a new 7 OR Ambulatory / In-Patient Surgery Suite, Imaging and a Women’s Health Center and a variety of clinics including Pediatrics, Cardiac Care, Ophthalmology and others. The project also includes 21,000 SF of shell space on the 6th floor.
New Emergency Department
The driving element of this expansion and modernization is the new 22,000 SF Emergency Department which replaces the existing undersized, overcrowded and inefficient ED. Key attributes of this new ED include the following:
A design which facilitates bedside registration, thereby minimizing waiting and maximizing through-put. Key to this approach is the split flow design with direct access from the entry to a “Fast Track” unit with a mix of stretcher and recliner stations.
The acute care portion of the ED is designed on a modular basis, where one area can be shut down during slow periods.
Dedicated radiology and a CT unit are provided in the ED.
An emphasis on private rooms, including specialty rooms including OB/GYN, Dialysis, and Isolation Rooms
A Pediatric ED unit is provided adjacent to the acute entry with separate Peds waiting treatment bays and a Pediatric Isolation Room.
Creation of a mid-block ambulance drive-thru and drop-off, greatly improving flow and relieving congestion on this tight urban site.
