Project Description

The design of Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute was highly influenced by the facility’s low-vision users. An impressive three-story atrium space acts as a circulation spine for visitors, with entries located at both ends. Design elements within the atrium serve as wayfinding components for patients with low vision. Tall stone columns rising through the space serve as points of reference from either entry. High contrast flooring materials, visible from both exterior entries, clearly identify entrances to individual clinic spaces within. The building consists of diagnostic and clinical research spaces, administrative areas, traditional offices, and meeting spaces including a large meeting room available for campus-wide use. The finished design has become one of the most iconic buildings on the UNMC Campus.
