The Additive Manufacturing Integrated Energy (AMIE) project, led by SOM’s Brian Lee, is a groundbreaking research collaboration between several industry partners and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. AMIE includes an integrated energy system that shares energy between a 3D-printed, natural gas–powered vehicle and a 3D-printed building. The project addresses urbanization challenges by using a mobile power source, integrated photovoltaics, and bidirectional wireless energy technology to reduce carbon emissions. Through utilizing advanced manufacturing and rapid innovation, the timeline from AMIE’s conceptualization to launch spanned just one year.
