Analytic provider CoreLogic assesses the risk of surge-related property damage to U.S. single-family residences near the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic basins in an annual evaluation report. The company provides an estimate of the number of homes that are vulnerable to storm surge, along with an associated reconstruction value (RCV). To calculate the numbers, CoreLogic uses its RCV methodology to estimate the cost of rebuilding in the event of a total loss. These estimates factor in geographical pricing differences.

In the 2018 analysis, more than 6.9 million homes along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts had the potential for storm surge damage with a total estimated RCV of more than $1.6 trillion. These numbers have increased compared with previous years. According to Howard Botts, vice president and chief scientist for CoreLogic, those increases show the value of this type of data and point out the risk of waterfront development and the damage potential.
