Jersey Shore Home Collapses After FEMA Work

A house damaged in Hurricane Sandy slid off of its footing during repairs after a subcontractor working underneath the elevated home undermined the cribbing — the wooden blocks that form temporary pillars while a new foundation is laid — as it dug to remove the existing footings. Workers underneath scrambled to safety.

The June 9 incident damaged the house beyond repair, according to the Asbury Park Press, and the house had to be demolished.

“Everything inside the house was wrecked,” construction official Bob Burlew said. “We couldn’t allow it to be put back on the foundation. It was beyond the point of repair.”
