Although the 2019 Builder’s Choice & Custom Home Design Awards’ Project of the Year boasts modern, minimalist qualities, the Austin, Texas–based Sugar Shack Residence accommodates a bustling family looking for function as well.

In the home’s living room area, local firm Alterstudio Architecture added a unique storage feature between the oak wood–lined hallway to the master suite and the fireplace. A dark steel-paneled closet sits flush with the fireplace wall and balances the other metal details present throughout the room. On the right side of the piece of steel, the metal itself has been rolled to provide a handle to open the door that swings to the left.

“To me, it’s like a beautiful painting,” says Kevin Alter, partner at the firm. “You can see a little bit of the character and beautiful texture, due to the way the steel came through the rollers.”
