With the definition of what makes a “typical” family changing to be more inclusive, it’s time to rethink the usual ways we categorize layouts (like starter, move-up, and empty nest). Here are plans for more modern situations.

Car ownership isn’t a huge priority for Millennials, so the single garage shouldn’t be a deal-breaker for this smart design. Just 38 feet wide, the layout is a good fit for a narrow urban lot. The super-open kitchen and great room encourage easy entertaining. Located at a comfortable distance away from the private master suite, two secondary bedrooms offer room for guests, working from home (especially the bright, front-facing room), or children.
