Resort-Style Living Entices Midwestern Retirees

Heritage Harbor offers a marina setting 90 minutes from Chicago.

Some empty-nesters are looking to bypass traditional retirement options such as a 55+ community or a second home in the Sun Belt, but still seeking a home that gives them a resort lifestyle near their network of family and friends.

Developed by local businessman Tom Heimsoth, Heritage Harbor Ottawa is a marina resort community along the Illinois River in Ottawa, Ill., about 90 minutes from Chicago. It features a variety of low-maintenance waterfront homes in pocket neighborhoods surrounding a 32-acre harbor and full marina. In addition to offering riverfront living and boating amenities, the community is situated in the midst of Starved Rock Country – a recreational region that boasts natural surroundings, four state parks, and plentiful opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing, golfing and other outdoor activities.

With its proximity to Chicago, many boomers appreciate that they can get the lifestyle they want, but still be close enough for family and friends to easily come visit – and vice versa.
