Yesterday, at New York City’s Samsung 837 headquarters, appliance maker Samsung and home design web site Houzz shared insight and research about consumer trends in the kitchen. According to the residential remodeling and design platform’s studies, the top reason homeowners renovate their kitchens is to add personalization.
Among Houzz’s key findings:
- Homeowners are spending more than ever on home renovations, particularly first-time homeowners and millennials (ages 25-34). First-timers who bought their home in 2016 spent $33,800 on average, 22% more than the year prior.
- Over a quarter of homeowners (28%) consider integration of smart technology very important to their renovation. This is especially true for first-time home buyers, 35% of whom cite smart technology as very important to their home renovation decisions.
- Kitchens are opening up more, making design more important than ever. More than half (51%) of kitchen renovators on Houzz say they are connecting it more seamlessly to an adjoining room, while 20% are opening it to the outdoors.

At the gathering, Samsung launched its Chef Collection line of appliances, designed to fulfill those buyer needs while addressing the aspirations of a new generation who look to the kitchen as not just a room to cook in, but as a reflection of their lifestyle and aesthetic preferences.

The line-up includes chef-inspired features in a premium suite of flush-mounted wall ovens, cooktops with beveled edges and LED illuminated knobs, a pro-range, a dishwasher, and refrigerators, including the industry’s first fully integrated 42” Built-In 4-Door Flex model. All are offered in a minimalist, sleek stainless or matte black stainless steel finish. The refrigerator and dishwasher are also panel-ready, so they can be customized to the specific aesthetic tastes of the homeowner as design preferences change over time.

Wi-Fi connectivity for each of the collection’s appliances gives consumers peace of mind that the stove isn’t still simmering while they are out of the house, and that the dishwasher cycle has been started after a night of entertaining. In fact, all of the Chef Collection’s features, such as remote pre-heating, can be controlled from a smart phone. Plus, Samsung’s View Inside cameras make it possible for consumers to view what’s cooking or being stored in the appliance from anywhere.
The collection also keeps installers in mind with less cumbersome packaging solutions and time-saving features such as pre-drilled holes and easy leveling that speed up installation. Installers can run Wi-Fi-enabled, remote diagnostic checks to ensure the appliance is functioning properly and help reduce repeat visits for repairs.

“The kitchen is the room we connect and spend time with family and friends. It’s where we relax, celebrate, nourish and create,” says John Herrington, senior vice president and general manager of home appliances at Samsung Electronics America. “With its beautiful design and surprising technology, Chef Collection enables and inspires these important moments in our lives.”
