We are proud to present three gorgeous winners of the 2008 Custom Home DesignAwards in this issue of CUSTOM HOME OUTDOORS.

While our panel of independent judges—custom builders D.D. Ford of D.D. FordConstruction in Santa Barbara, Calif., and Joe McKinstry of Joseph McKinstryConstruction in Seattle; and architects Bernard Wharton, AIA, of ShopeReno Wharton, Greenwich, Conn., and Peter Zimmerman, AIA, Peter ZimmermanArchitects in Berwyn, Pa—did not find a winner among the entriesin the Outdoor Spaces category this year, they did choose three outdoor projectsfrom other categories for awards. These special projects are as inspiringas any we’ve seen. They are stunning objects in the landscape, and theyare much more. They enrich and enhance the beauty of their sites, and theymake their owners’ properties more functional and more fun. You will findthese three outdoor beauties beginning on page 21.

We also have more winning ideas for you starting on page 6. These are the outstandingoutdoor spaces of several houses that won this year’s Custom HomeDesign Awards. We never have the space to show every great design featureof every house that wins an award. But these three were too good to pass up, andwe made room for them here, where they fit right in with all the othergreat outdoor design ideas you’ll find in this issue.
