Fine Finishes: Carver’s Art

1 MIN READ

Woodcarver Deborah Mills of Deborah Mills Woodcarving and Art Furniture works with traditional techniques and themes to create one-of-a-kind designs in wood for applications that include doorways and doors, window frames, mantel pieces, friezes, panels, furniture, decorative items, and more. She also regularly works with subcontractors to hand carve elements built by others.

Much of Mills’ work is heavily influenced by her study of Scandinavian folk art and the Viking carving traditions, and it exhibits the same intricacies and simplicities of detail. However, her range also includes Art Deco, Baroque, Early American, Egyptian, and just about any other style. She can coax delicate fretwork and intertwining shapes out of wood, as well as simple, straightforward bas-reliefs and freestanding forms. Mills’ repertoire includes original works and reproductions of historical or period pieces. If a client likes a specific piece of her work but needs it in a different size, Mills can reproduce the design in the required dimensions. She also offers simple finishes that enrich the wood, as well as decorative finishes such as 22-karat gilding, paint, and stain. Mills works with all kinds of wood, including oak, walnut, poplar, and cherry. 212.447.5146. www.furniturenewyork.org/members.html.
