The Art of Fire
When Walter Moberg
of Moberg Fireplaces begins working with a client for a custom
fireplace, the first question he asks is, “How will you use the
fireplace?” The answer becomes the foundation for the rest of the design
process.
“So often the fireplace means the mantelpiece or its interior elevation and how that presents itself in terms of the architectural elevation of the house,” Moberg says. “The element I add to this is function and use.” Moberg Fireplaces offers a full-service program for fireplace design and fabrication—not just mantelpieces or surrounds, but also the inner workings of fireplaces.
Mixing traditional materials like stone and wood as well as more modern materials like stainless steel or titanium, Moberg can create fireplace systems in either wood-burning or gas-fueled models. The company also designs programmable gas log sets that simulate the look and movement of a real wood-burning fire.
“We are really at our best and provide the greatest benefit for the client when there are significant or challenging fireplaces to be designed,” Moberg says. The firm’s more exotic projects and computer-controlled gas systems require input from Moberg’s consultants. 503.227.0547. www.mobergfireplaces.com
Coating with Colors
Drawing
from a palette of 24 standard colors as well as its database of
Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, and Pantone color formulations, glass
finishing company GlassKote USA can match nearly any color to produce
custom finishes on glass for a variety of architectural and interior
accent applications. The GlassKote treatment chemically and permanently
bonds a durable and moisture-resistant color coating—including patterns,
images, and textures—to the back of smooth or textured glass sheets.
Color textures include metallic, opaque, translucent, sparkle, and
fluorescent. The most popular GlassKote applications are kitchen
and bath backsplashes, countertops, shower walls, and cabinet doors, but
nearly any vertical or horizontal application is possible, such as
elevators, pillars, mirrors, partitions, steps, and floors. Many types
of glass can be used, from tempered to etched and curved to slumped.
The glass can be fabricated to include cut-outs for electrical switches and any other obstacles that it will fit over. GlassKote glass is installed with adhesive rather than mechanical fasteners. Turnaround time is typically four weeks. 866.664.5683. www.glasskoteusa.com
