For years, Debbie Comito of Comito Building and Design honed the polish from slabs of granite for a natural finish that required less maintenance to keep clean; a technique called “leathering.”

“Just this year I started noticing that a lot of the granite yards offer a leathered look,” says Comito, whose company sources its granite from Capco Tile & Stone and Percoco Marble. “You can take an absolute black and leather it and it looks like a leather sofa,” she says. The finish comes in a range of textures from very rough to almost smooth. Comito suggests using polished granite for the perimeter countertops and a leathered-look on the kitchen island. Clients are loving it, she says. “There’s a display at one of the yards in town and it is just amazing, everyone wants to touch it and feel it.”
