Jennifer Pippin Pippin Home Designs, Mooresville, N.C. Custom home designer Jenny Pippin frequently works with clients who need more refrigerator storage in their kitchens and in rooms that are far from the kitchen. Rather than gobbling up space with an additional full-size refrigerator, Pippin incorporates Sub-Zero’s refrigerator and freezer drawers into new or existing cabinetry.

“My clients like the fact that they’re unique, different, and they’re small,” Pippin says. “They don’t take up a lot of space.” The refrigerator and freezer drawers, part of Sub-Zero’s 700 series, can be fitted with custom cabinetry fronts to match the rest of the room. Installed into home office cabi-netry, she says, the drawers are indistinguishable from other storage spaces.

The drawer models are 27 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and come in two-drawer configurations. “Sub-Zero refrigeration and freezer drawers add extra freezer or refrigeration space to wet bars or butler’s pantries, even home theaters. Some people use them as crispers or to store drinks. Some even put them in the master suite coffee bar or exercise room,” says Pippin. The drawers can replace full-sized refrigerators if the appropriate amount is installed, she says.

Guy Semmes Hopkins & Porter Construction, Potomac, Md. For kitchen islands with sinks and garbage disposals, Guy Semmes used to have to locate the disposal switches near the floor inside the sink base cabinet, making them difficult to reach and use. But for one project, an architect on staff found In-Sink-Erator’s SinkTop Switch, and Semmes has been using these handy little air-activated buttons ever since.

The beauty of the button, Semmes says, is that because it is air-activated it can be mounted directly onto a sink’s surface or on the countertop next to the sink without risk of electric shock during use. The switch’s operating box plugs into an outlet under the sink and also provides a power source for an additional appliance that is used only intermittently, such as an instant hot water dispenser. The two-outlet design eliminates the need for routing an additional electrical circuit to the island for the second appliance. “Any other item that’s not used that often can be run off the same circuit as the SinkTop Switch, as long as the family understands that using one appliance will detract power from any other it’s connected with,” says Semmes. The SinkTop Switch’s trim kit includes chrome and white finishes, but special-order colors, such as satin nickel, brass, and black are also available.
