Michael C. Brown For eight years, custom builder Michael C. Brown has been building homes using the Arxx High-Performance Wallsystem of insulated concrete forms. Brown says the system provides a true structural foundation and provides for an excellent conditioned crawlspace.
The Wallsystem’s interlocking, lightweight expanded polystyrene forms provide a shell for poured concrete and remain an integral part of the wall once the concrete is cured. The concrete acts as an insulating thermal mass, while the exterior polystyrene moderates the concrete’s temperature. The interior polystyrene provides additional insulation. The manufacturer says its system is energy efficient, increases construction efficiency, and can provide a sound transmission rating of 50 or higher.
Arxx Building Products Brown says that in researching ICF systems, “The various range of parts and forms offered by Arxx was far and above all the other manufacturers.” Arxx offers 45- and 90-degree as well as adjustable-angle forms, along with 4-, 6-, 8- and 10-inch forms. Brown particularly likes the manufacturer’s brick ledge form.

Jay Grant Custom builder Jay Grant prefers to have cabinetry made for his clients’ homes by Knight Kitchens because the cabinetmaker works one-on-one with Grant’s designers to deliver a high-quality, custom product. He particularly likes that Knight Kitchens uses Enkeboll moldings in cabinetry designs, giving his kitchens some extra punch.
Knight Kitchens Knight Kitchens uses solid hardwood construction throughout its cabinets. Interiors and backs are made of 3/4-inch finished maple plywood, and shelves are 3/4-inch solid hardwood. Drawers are constructed with four-corner dovetail joinery with full-extension glides. A wide range of finishes, glazes, and colors is available.
Grant’s designers, Helen Walton and her partner, Laurie Levine, say they can present company owner George Ritter with drawings, photos, or magazine clippings, and he can replicate the designs. “We never have to say ‘no’ to a client,” says Walton.
