E. Decker Ayers
Edaco Custom Building, Austin, Texas
In custom builder Decker Ayers’ part of the country humidity, moisture, and mold are recognized as having a big impact on overall indoor air quality. Removing excess moisture from the indoor air not only reduces the opportunities for mold growth, it also increases home cooling efficiencies. Ayers has found an effective way to reduce moisture in the home, and he is beginning to use it in every house he builds: Aprilaire’s model 1700 whole-home dehumidifier.

Introducing fresh outside air into the HVAC system is critical to achieving a decent air exchange rate, Ayers says, and using Aprilaire’s dehumidifier allows him to bring in the fresh—but hot and humid—air of Austin and remove excess moisture before it circulates throughout the house. The system automatically manages moisture in the home to maintain a 30 percent to 60 percent humidity level, and it can switch between whole-house and localized settings. An optional built-in ventilation and fan cycling system brings in outside air periodically to improve indoor air quality.
