Home security and safety has been a driving force behind the increasing prominence of home technology. Now, more manufacturers are integrating automated technology into kitchen appliances for increased safety and convenience in the kitchen.

GE Appliances will now connect with Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to detect and alert homeowners on their smartphone of oven fires, smoke, or carbon monoxide in the oven.

The smoke and carbon monoxide alarm uses a split-spectrum sensor with two wavelengths of light to look for both fast and slow burning fires. If smoke is detected while the oven is on, the oven will send a command to turn off the oven. Homeowners will then receive a notification from the company’s Kitchen app letting them know that the oven has been turned off. If the oven is turned on and Nest detects that homeowners are away, Nest will send a command to turn off the oven and GE Appliances will send a notification to the connected user’s phone. Homeowners can then respond or silence the alarm.

The partnership with Nest follows GE Appliance’s partnership with Amazon, which brought both the dash replenishment feature to GE dishwashers and custom Amazon Alexa skills to GE kitchen appliances, which enabled homeowners to control ovens or dishwashers with a voice command.
