Echelon Corp. is making some headway in the residential sector with its automated LonWorks platform. Until now, LonWorks has mostly been deployed in commercial buildings and some multifamily projects. Through an arrangement with heating and cooling distributor Carrier West, Krafted Homes of Colorado Springs, Colo., installed a LonWorks device in a custom home that integrates all the heating and cooling thermostats. The homeowner will be able to manage the HVAC either via a touchscreen keypad or over the Web. Echelon has also developed a pilot home that demonstrates the potential of the LonWorks platform in the residential sector. The system uses LonWorks devices to integrate lighting, HVAC, and security.
