A new tool is available to help residential designers, builders, and plumbing contractors who will be affected by the new fire sprinkler mandate of the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC), which goes into effect Jan. 1, 2011.

Pros who will be required to design and install fire sprinkler systems in one- and two-family homes and townhouses can refer to “Residential Fire Sprinkler Systems: Design, Installation and Code Administration,” published recently by the International Code Council (ICC) and the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) to provide guidance on the code’s specific requirements.

The book outlines the basics of fire sprinkler system design, notes the differences between residential and commercial systems, offers guidance on selecting the most effective and cost-efficient piping solutions, and provides crucial information for passing plan reviews and inspections. An accompanying series of one- and multi-day training seminars is available to supplement the new publication.

“Residential Fire Sprinkler Systems: Design, Installation and Code Administration” is available for purchase at www.iccsafe.org/rfs.
