Urban Design & Construction, Wilmington, N.C. Building traditionally styled homes along the southern coast of North Carolina comes with a variety of coastal code requirements, particularly for windows. To negate the need for storm shutters, architect and general contractor John Urban frequently uses Andersen Windows & Doors’ 400 series impact-rated casement windows with Stormwatch Protection. “We deal with a lot of coastal construction, and those seem to hold up the best,” he says. Despite a 30 percent higher price tag, Urban says, using impact-rated windows instead of storm shutters saves money in the long run.

The 400 series Stormwatch-protected casement windows are available with high-performance glass options that provide both impact resistance and energy efficiency. The 400 series standard casement and picture casement windows offer a DP rating of +50/-65 pounds per square foot. “They’re pretty flexible, so I can get larger sizes and still get the design pressures we need to meet code,” Urban says.
