The surest sign of a builder’s respect for a product is when he chooses it for his own home. Gary Maynard, principal of Holmes Hole Builders on Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., specified Marvin’s Ultimate Double Hung windows for his personal residence, with no regrets. “I’ve never had a problem with them, which is rare,” he says. “It’s a really good product for the money.”
Another Maynard favorite is Tech Lighting. “I think its product line is incredibly versatile and well-designed,” he says. “It has a feeling of quality—nothing chintzy.” When shopping, he relies on the company’s website, from which “you can order what you need and get it in a short amount of time.” Maynard also is an avid fan of AdvanTech subfloors from Huber. “Some of our houses are so big, it takes a long time to close them in,” he explains. “AdvanTech stands up to the weather.”

Winchester Construction, Millersville, Md.
Winchester Construction builds houses in the Chesapeake Bay area—a sailing and boating haven—so it’s not surprising that some of supervisor Mike Campbell’s favorite products were recommended by boat-building friends. West System epoxies, for example, “are [popular in] the boating industry and are good for sealing any kind of ground contact for wood or masonry, such as the bottoms of exterior doors and the bottom 8 inches of exterior casings and jambs,” he says.
Campbell also likes Link-Seal modular sealing elements, citing their ability to prevent underground moisture penetration on sites near the water. And to shield their handiwork from above-ground damage, he and his co-workers count on surface-protection items from Protective Products. “All its stuff is good,” he says.
