Monty Moore Neil Kelly Co., Portland, Ore.

Monty Moore, a vice president of Neil Kelly Co., likes the cost benefits and durability of Faswall, a concrete block building system developed by ShelterWorks to reuse wood rubble. The blocks contain 85 percent recycled wood chips and insulated inserts with R-values of up to 24. “In the mountains it pays to use [the system] for the entire building envelope,” Moore says, “but even in more temperate climates it’s a great foundation product.”

LifeBreath heat-recovery systems, air exchangers, and high-efficiency furnaces from Airia Brands are another common spec in Neil Kelly homes. According to Moore, the heat-recovery system warms fresh air by 5 to 10 degrees so the furnace doesn’t have to work as hard.
