Products: Great Finds From the Field

Ray Tonjes Builder Inc., Austin, Texas

With termites a growing problem in Texas, Ray Tonjes has had to find creative solutions to termite prevention. Using pesticides is inefficient and environmentally unfriendly, he says, plus, “chemicals don’t hold up very well.” To protect his homes, Tonjes uses a termite barrier called the Termimesh System. This system combines a marine-grade stainless steel mesh barrier, a specially formulated bonding cement (Termiparge), and stainless steel clamps to provide a physical barrier to termites. The mesh’s matrix is too small for termites to squeeze through, too hard for them to chew through, and is non-corrosive. Installation targets the entry points of all service pipes and of perimeter wall cavities. A 2-inch collar of the mesh is applied around every penetration and secured by a stainless steel clamp. “The real value,” says Tonjes, “is that this is a lifetime product, and it is a green building product.”

Mike Caponetti
GF Rhode Construction, Boston

On a recent project in suburban Boston, GF Rhode Construction contracted with OpenAire, designer and manufacturer of retractable roof enclosures and operable skylights, to build a custom enclosure for the residence’s swimming pool. The company pre-manufactures and then site-assembles their custom enclosures. “The clients can have whatever shape, size, and configuration they work out with their architect,” says GF Rhode operations manager Mike Caponetti. “OpenAire can make structures to the architect’s and client’s plans.” OpenAire’s enclosures are constructed of thermally broken aluminum with many glazing and coating options. The motorized roof panels open up to 50 percent of the roof area when retracted. OpenAire’s structures can span more than 100 feet. “For people who want an indoor pool on their property but also enjoy the benefits of an outdoor pool, they get the best of both worlds,” Caponetti says.
